A study of university students, including a cross-sectional study and 9-month prospective cohort, has shown that the odds of reporting pharyngitis is three times greater in those receiving oral antibiotics for acne than in those not receiving antibiotics.
In the cross-sectional study 10 of 15 students receiving oral antibiotics for acne reported having an episode of pharyngitis within the last 30 days, compared with 47 of 130 students with acne but not receiving antibiotics. In the cohort study there were 576 students, 36 of whom received oral antibiotics for acne, 96 of whom received topical antibiotics for acne. The participants were asked to fill out a survey form, were swabbed for culture and had a visual examination for acne.
These findings need to be followed with further prospective studies.
