Researchers have found that patients with psoriasis have a greater risk of suffering from strokes and abnormal heart rhythm. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, and in the human body, the skin and blood vessels share the same sources of inflammation. In the study carried out by Danish scientists, 36,765 patients with mild psoriasis and 2793 with severe psoriasis were compared to nearly 4.5 million individuals.
In patients under 50 years of age with mild psoriasis, the risk of abnormal heart rhythm was increased by 50% with the risk of ischaemic stroke increased by 97%. In those with severe psoriasis, the risk of abnormal heart rhythm increased by 198%, with the risk of ischaemic stroke increased by 180%. The increased risks to those aged over 50 years of age were much smaller. The results suggest that patients with psoriasis could be considered at increased cardiovascular risk.
