German biochemist, microbiologist and clothes designer Anke Domaske has developed a way of making cloth out of milk, which is not only much more environmentally friendly that cotton production, but also eases skin conditions and allergy prone skin. The cloth, called Qmilch (Q for Quality followed by the German word for milk), is made from milk protein called casein. The protein is reduced to powder and then turned into thread which can be woven into fabric. The process took two years to perfect, and now the clothing line, Mademoiselle Chi-Chi has started to become popular in the United States.
Domaske began to develop the fabric after witnessing her stepfather suffering from irritable skin conditions whilst undergoing treatments for cancer, and as well as providing an alternative cloth for allergy-sufferers that feels like silk and doesn’t smell, the manufacturing process used only half a gallon of water to produce two pounds of fabric compared with the 10,000 litres of water used to make 2 pounds of cotton.
