What are the Free From Skincare Awards?

The awards were set up in 2012 to celebrate, encourage and reward the manufacture of skincare products that are ‘free from’ many of the allergens, chemicals, additives, ingredients and artificial fragrances associated with skin sensitivities and other health concerns - and which may be useful to those seeking more natural or pure cosmetics, or looking to avoid certain ingredients due to ethical or personal reasons, or those who have sensitive skin, or allergic or problem skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and acne.

Who is running the awards?

Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, editor of the Foodsmatter.com websites and founder-organiser of the hugely successful Free From Food Awards, now in their tenth year, and Alex Gazzola, deputy editor of SkinsMatter.com and a writer specialising in allergies, food intolerances and sensitivities.

Which products are eligible for entry?

Toiletries and cosmetics are eligibile. These are defined as preparations applied to the skin, hair or body for the purposes of cleaning and fragrancing, or to improve their health, condition or appearance.

Individual products must be entered into one of the fourteen categories of the awards.

Products must also meet our criteria - see 'Criteria and rules' page.

Products entered into previous years' awards may be entered again.

Which products are not eligible?

The following may not be entered:

* gift sets, make-up sets, multi-packs;
* hairstyling, make-up, cleaning or grooming tools, such as brushes, combs, razors etc;
* any electrical equipment, such as facial saunas / shavers;
* seasonal / limited edition (eg Christmas-only) products;
* beauty supplements, foods or tonics for oral consumption;
* sun protection products (eg sun creams / blocks, aftersun spray);
* dry face cloths, sponges, exfoliating mittens, loofahs etc.
* tampons / sanitary towels
* products unavailable for purchase from the UK/Ireland via usual outlets (chemists, health stores, shops) or by mail order from UK/Irish online stores.

If you have any queries about eligibility, please contact Alex.

What will judges be looking for?

Beauty Bible testers will be assessing products for natural and ‘free from’ qualities, and for performance, effectiveness and ease-of-use.

Expert judges will also be looking for innovation, originality, skin-healthy ingredients and benefits, and for products which denote an awareness and understanding of consumers with skin sensitivities or allergies, especially with regards to their labelling.

Products will receive credit for transparent ingredient information, especially in conveying ‘free from’ attributes (including allergens), as well as declaring the original sources of chemically derived ingredients.

Ingredients lists and labelling which are clearly legible and easily visible, with good text size, colour contrast and font choice, optimised to help legibility, will also be credited.

Credit will be given to products with zero or minimal petrochemical input (ie as reagents or preservatives only.)

Other issues will also be taken into account, and these include value for money, packaging / presentation, use of sustainable / environmentally friendly, minimally processed or organic ingredients, use of natural preservatives, and modest fragrance allergen content.

(Our Review of the 2012 Awards may offer additional useful insights to entrants, as might our 2013 Awards presentation speech.)
